The Uruguay defender left Juventus this summer

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is considering bringing free agent Martin Caceres to Stamford Bridge with the Uruguay international having left Juventus this summer.

The 29-year-old was left go by Juventus this summer, after making just nine appearances for the Old Lady in all competitions last season, while there are also question marks over the Uruguayan’s fitness, after suffering persistent injuries in recent campaigns.

But with Conte having missed out on high-profile targets Kalidou Koulibaly and Leonardo Bonucci during the transfer window, the former Italy boss is still keen to reinforce his back four, which he considers to lack strength in depth.

Caceres wouldn’t come without a fee, though, as it would cost ÂŁ2.5 million to get a deal done for the free agent, who Conte managed for a spell during his time in charge of Juventus.

Marcos Alonso and David Luiz both arrived on deadline day, as Conte sweated on those late deals being completed late on but, should Caceres join, it would at least ease the club’s concerns until January, when the transfer window reopens.

Caceres was praised highly during his time in Turin, but injury concerns ultimately saw his four-year spell in Italy come to an end. However, the former Barcelona defender would be quality back up to the likes of Gary Cahill and John Terry.

Chelsea warmly welcomed Alonso and Luiz on deadline day, to bolster a defence that conceded 53 goals last campaign, however, it’s clear that Conte believes there is a lot of work still to be done at the back.
