Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson has admitted that he has been impressed with Bacary Sagna’s performances at centre-back, despite the Frenchman naturally being a right-back.
Due to an injury to Thomas Vermaelen and Laurent Koscielny serving a one-game suspension after being sent off against Aston Villa, Sagna was deployed as centre-back for the game at Fulham on Saturday, and he didn’t put a foot wrong all match.
Not only was he playing at centre-back against Fulham, he was also featuring there during the side’s 3-0 victory against Fenerbache after Koscielny sustained a serious head injury.
Sagna’s versatility has impressed manager Arsene Wenger, but it has also impressed his team-mate Jenkinson and the Englishman believes it bodes well for the future that Sagna can play both right-back and centre-back.
“Even during pre-season and at the start of the season, whenever he’s played there he’s been excellent,” he said. “I enjoy playing with him when he is playing as the right-sided centre back.
“He’s good in the air, he’s quick – that’s nice to have – and, all-round, he’s a very capable defender. But everyone who’s played centre half this season has done very well.
“Personally, I think Sagna has impressed massively in that position when he’s played there. He’s obviously a great right back as well.”
