Arsenal have donated £50,000 to Sutton United to help the non-league club to improve their facilities.

The kind gesture from the Premier League side came out after the Gunners beat the National League side 2-0 in the FA Cup Fifth Round tie.

Arsenal’s victory at Gander Green Lane ended a fairytale cup run for Sutton that is rumoured to have earned the club over £1million.

With United needing money to make developments around the stadium and the club, Sutton manager Paul Doswell revealed the nice contribution Arsenal are due to make.

“The reality is that Arsenal have been superb all the way through this,” Doswell said after the game.

“We think they’re going to help us with the classroom, that’s what we’re trying.

“It’s going to go into the community fund and they’ve promised us £50,000 and that will buy two classrooms.

“That is an amazing gesture from them and one we’re very thankful for.”

The donation from the Gunners will need clearance from the FA before it can be put through though.

Doswell continued to say how the rest of the money generated by the FA Cup run will be spent and insisted it will only be spent for good use.

He added: “The money will be spent on 100 children, 16-18, on site. We’ll buy new dressing rooms, new classrooms, all the toilets [will be fixed].

“Everything you could want your house to look like, we’ll get it in order. It won’t be spent on players.”

Arsenal also held a joint-community day with Sutton last Friday as teams from Arsenal’s boys’, girls’ and mental health football programmes came together for a round of matches at Gander Green Lane.

Lucas Perez and Theo Walcott got on the scoresheet for Arsene Wenger’s side in their FA Cup victory.
