Lyon have all but confirmed that Arsenal made a £50million offer to sign star striker Alexandre Lacazette in the summer transfer window.

It is no secret that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been a keen admirer of Lacazette for a while, with Lyon confirming at the time that they rejected a £29m bid from the Gunners.

Even though he did not name a specific club, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has now confirmed that they received further offers of £50m from Premier League sides, which were still not enough to persuade the French giants to let their key player go.

“This summer, we rejected €55m [£49.7m] for Lacazette from two Premier League clubs and €37m from Napoli for [Corentin] Tolisso,” Aulas told Tuttosport.

Arsenal’s failure to capture the France international eventually led them to sign Lucas Perez, who joined from Spanish outfit Deportivo La Coruna.

However, it is Alexis Sanchez who has ended up in the striker role so far this term after moving into the centre from the wing.
