Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has added Schalke captain Benedikt Howedes as a potential target this Summer, as the Frenchman continues to hunt for a new centre-back.

The Gunners have already been busy this Summer, signing four players, but after selling Thomas Vermaelen to FC Barcelona, the North-London club are now back in the market for defensive reinforcements.

Wenger is confident with his first-team partnership of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, but he is keen on finding a backup in order to have depth in his squad.

It’s believed that Arsenal are still in the market for a centre-back and also a defensive midfielder, and it appears that Wenger likes Howedes due to his versatility, and the fact that he can play at the back and also in midfield.

The 26-year-old would be The Gunners’ fourth German in their first-team, alongside Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski.
