Arsenal to spend £34 million on Laporte

Arsenal have reignited their interest in Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao. The youngster was another name who was linked with the Gunners over summer, only for no move to end up materialising.

In the end, the Frenchman decided to sign a new deal in Spain, despite interest not only from Arsenal but from Man United and Barcelona too. The new deal sees his contract expire in 2018. However, a release-clause was also added into his contract, one that is worth £34m.

And Arsene Wenger is now so desperate to sign him that he is prepared to meet the release clause fee in January. The club are looking quite light at the back with an injury to Debuchy and with Vermaelen having left the club (and Sagna) it leaves the Emirates Stadium side hoping that they don’t pick up any further defensive injuries.

It means that they’ll need to splash the cash on defenders in the next transfer window and Laporte is top of the target list.
