Ex-Arsenal star links up with old friend Guardiola

Ex-Arsenal star Mikel Arteta has agreed to become one of Pep Guardiola’s backroom staff at Manchester City.

City will be announcing the appointment imminently, after Arteta turned down interest from both Tottenham Hotspur and former club Arsenal, who offered him a position in their academy. The 34-year-old left the Gunners at the end of this season as his contract ended, following an injury-hit campaign.

Arteta left Arsenal on good terms and is seen by the club’s board members as a very promising future managerial candidate, however for now he’s linked up with old friend Pep Guardiola, who he’s known since his days playing for Barcelona’s youth sides.

One of the Spaniard’s first tasks at the Etihad might be to help secure the signing of John Stones from Everton, although his old club are adamant that he won’t be sold.

City have already made one high-profile purchase this summer, signing Ilkay Gundogan from Borussia Dortmund, in what’s sure to be a busy period as Guardiola builds his squad ahead of their Premier League and Champions League campaigns.

As for Arteta, in his final season at Arsenal he made nine Premier League appearances, creating one chance and winning 51% of his average duels, with an average pass accuracy of 88%.
