United have been tracking the German international, also a target for both Arsenal and Real Madrid, for some time while David Moyes is desperate to bolster his misfiring midfield.
But there hopes of signing Borussia Dortmund star Ilkay Gundogan appear to have taken a turn for the worse with the news that Barcelona have entered the fray for the combative midfielder.
According to reports on the Spanish press, Gundogan’s father has already met with members of the Barcelona board as the Catalan giants try to steal a march on their rivals for the 23-year-old’s signature.
Gundogan’s contract with Dortmund expires at the end of the 2015 season while he his currently only banking a £25,000-a-week salary, this certainly leaves him open to a tempting offer from either the Premier League or La Liga.
Gundogan as the ideal replacement for Xabi Alonso should the former Liverpool midfielder choose not to renew his deal at the Bernabeu which is due to expire at the end of the current campaign.
