Joey Barton has been suspended by Rangers for 3 weeks, 6 days after he was sent home following a heated encounter with his Rangers teammate Andy Halliday.

Barton, 34, who admitted to saying “inappropriate things” to teammate Andy Halliday returned to Ibrox for a meeting on Monday.

Rangers have released a statement saying that the club and Mark Warburton felt all parties needed “time and space” and that neither the club or Barton would make “any further statement.”

The incident occurred between Barton and Halliday when the team were reviewing their 5-1 loss to arch rivals Celtic.

After being told to stay away from the club, Barton released a statement admitting that he did “overstep the mark.”

Minutes after posting the statement, he took to twitter and published a tweet which was later deleted saying “Apologising doesn’t always mean that you’re wrong and the other person is right. It means you value your relationship more than your ego.”

The following day, Barton gave a radio interview in which he said  he was sent home and Halliday was not because he also had a frank exchange of views with Warburton afterwards. The interview was not authorised by the club.

Barton described his suspension as “strange” and “wrong”.
