The defender discusses money and links with a Merseyside move

Schalke’s versatile defender Benedikt Howedes has opened up about rumours linking him with a move to join Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

Since Klopp was appointed manager at Anfield, several Bundesliga stars have been tipped to move to the club; especially those that worked under him at Borussia Dortmund.

German media outlets have suggested that Howedes may be tempted by the wage money of the Premier League. However, the 27-year old admitted it wasn’t about the money for him, it was about his ambition and he even brought up Liverpool in a recent interview.

‘Abroad still excites me’

When speaking to German newspaper Bild, Howedes said: “This may sound crazy, but for me it does not depend on the money. For that, I am too much of a football romantic and I am too ambitious.

Abroad still excites me, England sure is an interesting choice. But of course, the money is also important, as footballers we can only earn money for a limited time.”

“English football is very fortunate to have someone like Klopp in the league, Liverpool is a club with great tradition and values,” added the 2014 World Cup winner.

“I am with Schalke 04 and currently have an objective here, but of course for any footballer there are clubs which are more interesting than others.”

Howedes is out of contract in 2017, something that the new Reds’ boss Klopp may exploit in the winter transfer window.
