German champions and Champions League winners Bayern Munich have beaten Europa League winners Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup this evening after the game went to a penalty shoot-out.

Fernando Torres gave Jose Mourinho’s men the perfect start with an 8th minute opener. After great work from Eden Hazard, the Spaniard found himself unmarked in the Munich penalty area and then lashed home a sweetly timed volley, much to the delight of the Chelsea fans.

The Blues then took that 1-0 lead into half-time, but just two minutes after the kick-off, Franck Ribery got Munich level with a low-shot from outside the box, which just creeped underneath Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal.

To make things harder for Mourinho’s side, Ramires saw red late in the second-half for a second yellow, but the English side held on for extra-time.

It was in fact the 10-men of Chelsea that took the lead after a low Hazard shot went underneath Manuel Neuer in the Munich goal and that looked like it was going to be the winner until Javi Martinez equalised with the last kick of the game.

Penalties it was once again, much like it was back when the two sides met in the Champions League final two years ago, but this time, it was the Germans who were celebrating at the end after Romelu Lukaku missed the final penalty.
