Centre-back extends his stay at Old Trafford

Manchester United have announced that defender Phil Jones has signed a new deal at the club, extending his stay until 2019.

The England international has been in talks with officials at Old Trafford in recent weeks, and the club have announced this evening that the centre-back has put pen to paper on a four-year deal.

The 23-year-old has made 128 appearances for The Red Devils since joining from Championship side Blackburn Rovers, and despite not developing as quickly as the club had hoped, Louis Van Gaal has still shown his trust in the defender.

With Mats Hummels, Sergio Ramos and Nicolas Otamendi all linked with summer moves to Manchester, it was reported that Jones could be left on the fringes at Old Trafford, but Van Gaal has decided to reward the centre-back with a new deal.

Manager Statement

Louis van Gaal said: “We are delighted that Phil has signed a new contract. He is a talented footballer with great versatility and can play in a number of positions.

“Phil is a relatively young defender who is developing all the time. He missed some of last season due to injury but I was impressed by his professionalism and attitude during those periods.”

Player Statement

Jones said: “I am delighted to have signed a new deal. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here so far and am looking forward to continuing my development as a player.

“This a great club to be part of and I cannot wait to start the new campaign. I would like to thank the manager, coaching staff and fans for their continued support.”
