Sunderland Football Club have completed the signing of Toivonen on a season-long loan

The attacking midfielder has moved to the Black Cats on a temporary basis from Ligue 1 side Stade Rennes.

Speaking to safc.com the 29-year-old revealed his eagerness to play and hit the ground running in the Barclays Premier League.

“I’m very pleased to be a Sunderland player and I’m excited to get started, I can’t wait to start playing and have my first training with the boys.”

“I worked with Dick Advocaat for one year at PSV and we came along very well so I’m excited to work together again” said Toivonen.

Advocaat has also expressed his delight at bringing the striker to the Stadium of Light and hopes he will make a real impact.

He is a national team player with a lot of experience, an attacking midfielder who can score goals and is good in the air” said Advocaat.

Toivonen started off playing for his hometown club (Degerfos IF) before moving on to Gothenburg-based club Örgryte IS, followed by a two-year spell with Malmö FF.

The 29-year-old scored 16 goals in 51 games whilst at the Swedish top-flight club before earning a move to the Eredivisie where he joined PSV Eindhoven.

In January of last year, Toivonen switched Holland for France, completing a move to Rennes for a fee believed to be in the region of 2.5million euros.
