Spurs make first move for Belgium defender

Tottenham Hotspur are set to hold formal talks with Atletico Madrid defender, Toby Alderweireld, according to Sky Sports News.

The 26-year-old has been strongly linked with a permanent move to England after spending last season on loan at Southampton, and with The Saints, Spurs and Chelsea all reportedly interested, a move looks certain to happen over the summer.

Atletico Struggles/Saints Loan

Alderweireld failed to break into Atletico Madrid‘s first-team and only managed 12 La Liga appearances during his time there, before being sent to Southampton on a season-long loan last year.

The centre-back was an impressive figure for Ronald Koeman‘s side throughout the 2014/2015 season, making 25 Premier League appearances, and his performances have caught the eye of three clubs.

According to Sky Sources, Spurs are set to make the first formal move by holding formal talks with the Belgium international, with Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino ready to start their summer business.

Premier League Interest

The news will come as a blow to both Chelsea and Southampton, who are both reportedly interested in signing the experienced defender.

Alderweireld has made 47 appearances for Belgium’s first-team and could link up with national team-mate Jan Vertonghen at White Hart Lane.
