BT Sport have struck a deal close to £1billion which allows them to show Champions League football as well as Europa League.

The news comes as a huge blow to ITV and also Sky as it means BT will now have the rights to show matches from Europe’s elite competitions.

The deal allows BT to show the final of both competitions and over three seasons, they will roughly be spending £299m per campaign.

A spokesman from the channel has revealed how delighted he is to announce the news.

‘I am thrilled that BT Sport will be the only place where fans can enjoy all the live action from the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League,’ said BT’s chief executive Gavin Patterson.

‘Both tournaments are world class and firm favourites with many. The live rights will give a major boost to BT Sport and give people yet another reason to take our terrific service.

‘BT Sport has got off to a strong start with customers enjoying what we have to offer. We have attracted millions of customers by giving sport back to the fans, and we can assure people who want to catch all the action, that European football will be far more accessible and affordable with BT.’

The news means ITV are now left with no live club football as of 2015 due to BT Sport and the BBC having won the rights to the FA Cup after this current campaign ends.
