Only one ‘cupset’ in last night’s Capital One Cup Third Round results

The Capital One Cup returned last night with eight ties taking place in the third round, and it was a night for the favourites as only one ‘cupset’ took place and that came at the KC Stadium.

Championship side Hull City saw off Premier League opposition Swansea City 1-0 thanks to a first-half strike from David Meyler.

The recently-relegated side booked their spot in the fourth round at the expense of Garry Monk‘s men, and it was also a night that saw Jake Livermore return to action following his cocaine use at the end of last season.

The other seven ties went the way it was expected.

AFC Bournemouth however were took all the way by Championship club Preston North End. The Cherries had to rely on a penalty shoot-out to book their spot in the next round after drawing the game 2-2.

Summary of Results

Premier League leaders Manchester City dumped more misery on Dick Advocaat‘s Sunderland with an emphatic 4-1 win at the Stadium of Light, while Aston Villa came out winners in the Midlands derby against Birmingham City thanks to a solo-goal from Rudy Gestede.

Elsewhere, Stoke City picked up a 1-0 away win against Fulham at Craven Cottage, Leicester City continued their fine start to the season by beating Slaven Bilic‘s West Ham 2-1 in an all-Premier League affair.

Middlesbrough eased past Wolves 3-0 at the Riverside Stadium and Everton came from behind to beat Championship side Reading 2-1.

All eyes turn to tonight’s action, with another eight games on the card.
