Midfielder wanted to leave on Transfer Deadline Day

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel wanted to leave Stamford Bridge on Transfer Deadline Day, only for the club to block his departure after failing to land Juventus’ Paul Pogba.

The Nigerian was desperate to move on from Chelsea in order to play regular first-team football elsewhere, and although he declared he was happy to stay at the club earlier on in the summer, he was ready to move away on deadline day.

Move to Turkey

According to reports, the long-serving Blues midfielder was close to agreeing a move to Super Lig side Besiktas, but the move was blocked by officials at The Bridge who didn’t want to sell him without a suitable replacement coming in.

Turkish newspaper Radyospor confirmed that the deal was all set to go through but The Blues pulled the plug at the last minute after failing to land Pogba from Juve.

It’s believed Mikel will spend the remainder of this season at the Premier League champions before moving on at the end of the season, ending his near 10-year stint at the club.
