Full-back rules out move to Portugal
Chelsea have been given the all-clear to sign Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao after he dismissed reports that he’s set for a return to his homeland.
The full-back has been strongly linked with a move to Sporting Lisbon after failing to break into the Madrid first-team, but on his official Facebook page, he confirmed that Benfica are the only team in Portugal for him.
Coentrao has struggled for game-time at the Bernabeu Stadium and reportedly wants out this Summer in order to resurrect his career, with Chelsea interested.
Chelsea Interest
Jose Mourinho worked with the left-back during his time in Spain and the two built a strong relationship together before he returned to West London with Chelsea.
According to reports, The Blues could make a formal offer of around £10-15million for the 27-year-old, but faced competition from Lisbon who are also interested.
However, the defender has given the Premier League champions a boost after confirming he wouldn’t join Lisbon due to his past Benfica days.
Move Snubbed
Coentrao said on his Facebook page: ‘Contrary to rumours that I will play for Sporting, and despite the respect I have for club, the only Portuguese club for me is Benfica.’
