Champions draw 2-2 at St James’ Park

Chelsea’s poor start to the Premier League campaign continued on Saturday evening when they were held to a 2-2 draw by strugglers Newcastle United.

After a London derby victory against Arsenal, the mood at Stamford Bridge was finally on the rise, but they traveled to St James’ Park knowing about their poor record against the Magpies.

It was Newcastle who ended Chelsea‘s unbeaten run last season with a 2-0 win against Jose Mourinho‘s men, and it looked like history was about to repeat itself in terms of the scoreline.

Match Summary

After a fairly quiet first-half, which saw Daryl Janmaat spurn a good chance for the hosts, it was Ayoze Perez who made the break-through four minutes from the interval.

After a deep-cross was swung in, Perez beautifully brought the ball down before thundering past Asmir Begovic. Questions were asked about Kurt Zouma and Branislav Ivanovic‘s defending, but it was a stunning goal from the Spaniard.

Steve McClaren‘s men looked to have wrapped up all three points when Georginio Wijnaldum headered home from a corner on the hour-mark to double the lead.

However, things got a bit nervy when Brazilian Ramires thumped home from long-range in emphatic fashion with just 11-minutes on the clock.

Sadly for Newcastle they couldn’t hold on as Willian scored directly from a free-kick once again after appearing to cross the ball in. The goal came with four minutes left and Chelsea were seeking a winner.

They nearly got the winner when Ramires saw his bullet header saved well by Tim Krul, but the game ended all square with two goals apiece.

The draw leaves Newcastle without a win and sitting 19th in the table, while Chelsea are just four places ahead in 15th.
