Blues eager to sign central-defender in the summer

Chelsea are keen on signing AS Roma centre-back Kostas Manolas over the summer and could be prepared to offer as much as £35million.

It’s well documented that the Blues will be fairly light in the defensive department for the start of next season. Kurt Zouma will still be injured after suffering a serious knee injury earlier this year, whilst John Terry won’t be at the club following his expected release.

That leaves Chelsea with just Branislav Ivanovic and Gary Cahill as central options, meaning a new centre-back will have to be signed during the pre-season.

Bid Already Rejected

According to reports, one option for the Blues is Manolas from Roma, and it’s claimed they’ve already made a formal bid of around £26m for the Greek international, only to see it be rejected.

However, officials at Stamford Bridge are prepared to go as high as £35m to sign him.

Manolas has been linked with a move to the Premier League before, with Arsenal interested in signing him during his Olympiakos days, but he eventually ended up at Roma, replacing Medhi Benatia, who joined Bayern Munich.

Other central options for Chelsea are John Stones from Everton and Marquinhos from Paris Saint-Germain.
