Mourinho wants to add to his defensive options, with his latest recruit

Chelsea are negotiating with Zenit St Petersberg over the potential signing of defender Ezequiel Garay.

Sky Italia claim that Chelsea are keen to do a deal with the Russian Premier League side, in order to bring the 28-year-old to West London, before the transfer deadline-day next week.

Garay joined Zenit in a ÂŁ4m deal from Portuguese side Benfica, and played a key role in the title winning side, who are managed by former Chelsea manager, Andre Villas-Boas.

International pedigree

At international level, Garay has earned 31 caps for his native Argentina, having helped them to the World Cup Final of 2014 – as Mourinho looks for suitable acquisitions, to tighten up his back-line.

Stones alternative?

Mourinho is expected to make a fourth offer for Everton centre-back John Stones, and should he he fail in his bid to land the former Barnsley man, attentions will turn to Garay as a long-term replacement for John Terry.

Chelsea could yet have competition on their hands for Garay’s signature, with Manchester United also keen.
