Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid set to battle it out for highly-rated Spanish defender
Chelsea have set their sights on signing 20-year-old Spanish defender Jose Gaya from Valencia ahead of the January transfer window.
The Premier League champions have been always been admirers of the Spaniard but never pushed for a move in the summer as John Stones was their main priority.
Everton turned down a number of bids for the England centre-half in the summer, and any future deal looking unlikely, Mourinho has turned his attention to sign Gaya.
Tough competition
Gaya has played 36 games for Valencia’s first team and signed a new contract with the club last season, but Chelsea still remain keen on signing the defender in January.
The Blues face tough competition from both Manchester City and Real Madrid who have also shown strong interest in Gaya.
However, with Manchester City completing a deal for Nicolás Otamendi and Real Madrid keeping club captain Sergio Ramos after avid interest from Manchester United, Chelsea could be the favourites to make the move.
