Anderlecht striker was on the brink of joining Newcastle United

Chelsea are set to hijack Newcastle United’s proposed deal for Anderlecht striker Aleksander Mitrovic.

The Serbian international was on the brink of signing for The Magpies, with his agent confirming the deal was close to being finalised.

However, the 20-year-old has made a drastic last minute U-turn on his decision and now doesn’t want to join Steve McClaren‘s side because he wants to be in the Champions League.

Chelsea’s Striker Plans

Chelsea were keen on signing Mitrovic earlier on in the summer, but after Newcastle looked favourites, they cooled their interest and instead loaned Radamel Falcao from AS Monaco for the season.

Despite signing Falcao, it’s believed The Blues are still in the market for a new striker with fears that Loic Remy will leave the club in order to play regular first-team football.

Remy Out/Mitrovic In?

The bookies have the Frenchman joining Crystal Palace in order to reunite with Alan Pardew, and if that deal does happen, Chelsea will renew their interest in Mitrovic.

The 20-year-old has been at Anderlecht for two years, scoring 36 goals in 69 league games.
