Les Reed says contract discussions have been “very positive”

Southampton director of football, Les Reed, insists the Saints are close to securing Clyne on a long-term deal, similar to Jay Rodriguez yesterday.

Clyne was previously at Crystal Palace before moving to Southampton in 2012, where he has made 39 appearance this season – establishing himself as a key part of Ronald Koeman’s plans.

Only yesterday, Jay Rodriguez signed a four-year contract which see him remain at Southampton until 2019 and Reed is “positive” Clyne will follow suit.

He added: “With Clyney it’s very much the same as with Jay in that we’ve been talking for quite a while and Nathaniel has made statements that he’s happy here.”

Rumoured interest

Clyne’s ambition to play in the Champions League has alerted the likes of Manchester United with Louis Vaal Gaal reported to be a long-term admirer of the 24-year-old.

Koeman completely understands Clyne’s desire to play in Europe’s elite competition and admitted it would be difficult to block a move should the likes of Chelsea or United come calling.

The Saints currently occupy seventh place and Europa League football is still well within reach, despite an exodus of players last season to the sum of around £90m.
