Blues set to launch £49m bid for Romagnoli

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte will look to improve his defence again in January by making a £49million bid for AC Milan centre-back Alessio Romagnoli.

The Blues boss tried to sign the star in the summer, but couldn’t lure him away from the San Siro.

It’s thought that Chelsea weren’t willing to meet the asking price back then, but are now reconsidering due to their current defensive woes.

David Luiz, who was signed very late on in the window, has failed to impress in his second stint at the club. This has coincided with a loss of form for Gary Cahill and several injuries to John Terry, meaning the door may be opened once again for the Blues to try signing Romagnoli.

Conte left then uncapped Romagnoli out of Italy’s squad for the Euros as he went with the strong and proven Juventus back-line of Giorgio Chiellini, Andrea Barzagli and Leonardo Bonucci.

But new natonal boss Giampiero Ventura called up Romagnoli, who made his Italy debut last week in the 1-1 draw against Spain.
