Conte reveals why defender didn’t play at Old Trafford

Antonio Conte has revealed why Chelsea star Marcos Alonso missed the team’s fixture away at Manchester United yesterday.

The left-wing back was initially named in the Blues starting XI yesterday but was replaced was Kurt Zouma after he couldn’t complete the warm-up.

He fell ill and Conte said it was ‘impossible’ for him to play. However, the Italian boss gave credit to his player for attempting to play despite being physically sick the night before.

Conte told NBC Sports: “Marcos Alonso tried before the game but a virus hit him during the night.

“He tried but it was impossible to play for him.

“For this reason we adapted another solution.”

United’s reshuffle meant that they lost a key player in their winning formula, and lost the game at Old Trafford 2-0.
