The Italian has identified the Brighton ‘keeper as his chosen replacement

Chelsea are willing to let Bournemouth target Asmir Begovic leave Stamford Bridge this month if they can secure the signing of Brighton goalkeeper David Stockdale.

Antonio Conte had previously stated that he would only let the Bosnian leave Stamford Bridge this month if he could find a replacement for the Blues no.2.

And it appears the Italian has identified Brighton’s Stockdale as the ideal candidate, with the Englishman having started all but one of the Championship table topper’s league games, with the club boasting the division’s best defensive record.

Conte had previously been eyeing Celtic’s Craig Gordon but their boss, Brendan Rodgers, has outright ruled out that move happening this month and is certain the ‘keeper will still be at the club at the end of the transfer window.

“Yes, absolutely. Because the strength is with the club,” Rodgers said, in response to questions about Gordon’s future beyond the end of the month.

“There are 18 months left here and where do I get another goalkeeper at this stage, when I am looking to build something?

“So I’m not really of the mindset to throw all of that out and be left having to look for another Champions League goalkeeper.”

Stockdale, 31, made 39 Premier League appearances for Fulham between 2008 and 2014, but has just six months remaining on his current deal.

Chris Hughton will also likely be adamant on not selling his goalkeeper, too, with his club aiming promotion and would have little time to find a sufficient replacement.
