The former Red Devils man has urged his teammate James Rodriguez to turn down a move to Old Trafford
Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken out about Man United’s interest in James Rodriguez and encouraged the player to turn down the Red Devils.
The Portugal international believes that his teammate still has a lot to offer Real Madrid and, despite previously plying his trade at Old Trafford himself, has encouraged Rodriguez to turn down a move but understands if he does choose to leave.
He told El Chiringuito de Jugones: “They are very personal situations, he is a top player and should stay because he has a lot to give to this shirt, he is still very young. But he has his reasons and we have to respect it.”
Ronaldo played at Old Trafford himself for six years and impressed many before securing a then world-record move to the Bernabeu.
James Rodriguez is heavily expected to leave Madrid this summer due to a lack of playing time. He has struggled to start regularly in the team, with several other players also vying for the same position as him and it has meant that he has often had to settle for a place on the bench.
Impressed when given the chance
However, when given the chance to shine for the club though, he has taken it with both hands. He’s featured ten times as a more central midfield figure for Madrid and in those games he bagged five goals and claimed four assists.
Even after coming on as a sub, he has managed one goal and four assists in those appearances off the bench.
There are a number of clubs lining up for his signature from all around Europe but it is Man United who are leading the race. They have held an interest in him for some time and are ready to step up that interest as they look to sign a big-name player.
The Red Devils wanted Antoine Griezmann but it seems that the player will now stay at Atletico Madrid, meaning that Jose Mourinho can focus all his attention on signing the Colombian instead.
However, if the player takes note of Ronaldo’s words, then he too may decide to stay at his current club and turn down the Red Devils.
