Borussia Dortmund are targeting Atletico Madrid’s newest star Diego Costa as a replacement for outgoing star striker Robert Lewandowski.

Brazilian-born striker Costa has been scoring for fun in La Liga this season. Costa has racked up 13 goals in the league this season in only 13 games.

The form of the striker has attracted attention from all over Europe. Premier League giants Arsenal and Chelsea are reportedly chasing the striker, with Liverpool also in the chase after having failed to bring the striker to Anfield in the Summer.

He has played in Spain since 2007 and recently became a Spanish citizen eligible to play the national squad – although has been ruled out of his first call up with a leg injury.

‘Costa is reportedly a fan of the Bundesliga and has asked about Dortmund in conversations with former players of the club.

According to German magazine Sport Bild, Costa would be interested in a move to the Bundesliga. Costa reportedly has a €24million (£20.1m) release clause in his contract that could be activated if Dortmund decide to bid. Although Costa has recently signed a contract keeping him there until 2018.

Sport Bild says the buy-out fee for the Champions League finalists would be affordable. Dortmund are trying to replace the star players they lost in an attempt to remain within the elite of Europe.

Shinji Kagawa left Borussia Dortmund for Manchester United but has yet to make an impact, whilst Lewandowski is expected to join his former team-mate Mario Goetze at Bayern Munich.

Lewandowski refused to sign a new contract with the club and is currently playing out his final year of the contract. This could mean that Lewandowski will leave for nothing at the end of the season.
