Chelsea were heavily linked with Roma striker Edin Dzeko throughout the last weeks of the transfer window but the move failed to materialize which forced Chelsea’s hand in signing Olivier Giroud instead.

Chelsea were desperate to sign the Bosnian striker with head coach Antonio Conte eager to add to his striker options with back-up striker Michy Batshuayi not fancied.

But reports suggested that Chelsea were unwilling to meet Dzeko’s contract demands. And ultimately, in a comical way, Chelsea ended up loaning out Michy Batshuayi to Borussia Dortmund which allowed Aubameyang to join Arsenal which resulted in Chelsea signing Arsenal striker Oliveir Giroud instead.

And now, the former Man City striker Edin Dzeko has revealed why he chose to stay at Roma instead of joining the Blues.

Dzeko told Bosnian outlet Klix: “It’s true that negotiations were being conducted, and that’s all I can say on the subject. There was a lot of speculation, as well as false and even funny claims. I was really flattered by the interest from Chelsea, a club I really respect and admire.

“In the past few weeks a lot of stories have circulated about me leaving Roma and yet I’m still here. In the end I’m happy to stay at Roma, because Rome has become my home and an indelible part of my life…I’m tied to this city by some of the happiest moments of my life.”

The 31-year-old added another reason he chose to stay; his family.

“I felt the joy of fatherhood for the first time here when my little girl Una was born, and my son Dani was born here too. Roma is part of my life now, and it always will be.”
