Reds star has until Thursday to prove he can start vs Villarreal

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has started training again after an ankle injury, and has until Thursday afternoon to prove to Jurgen Klopp that he is fit enough to start Liverpool’s Europa League game against Villarreal.

Liverpool are trailing 1-0 to the Spanish side after the first leg on foreign soil last week, and have it all to do at Anfield on Thursday night. However, this will be a massive boost for them, as Can’s recovery has come much sooner than expected.

Can picked up an ankle ligament injury in Liverpool’s home Europa League leg against Borussia Dortmund in the quarter final, and was expected to only make it back to competitive action in time for international duty at Euro 2016 for Germany.

However it’s thought that Can is now training and is trying to prove his fitness in order to make the starting XI at Anfield on Thursday.

Liverpool are light in central midfield as captain Jordan Henderson’s knee ligament injury in April prematurely ended his domestic season and has put his chances of making Euro 2016 with England in extreme doubt.

Can’s return to fitness is the second piece of good news in the last few days as striker Danny Ings, out since mid-October after anterior cruciate ligament surgery, returned to training towards the end of last week.
