Middlesbrough have completed the signing of Valencia defender Antonio Barragan on a three-year deal.

Barragan, 29, spent time on Liverpool’s books as a teenager, and is Aitor Karanka’s sixth summer arrival at the Riverside Stadium.

The right-back joins Viktor Fischer, Victor Valdes, Marten de Roon, Bernardo Espinosa and Jordan McGhee in Karanka’s new-look squad, as the Teeside club return to the Premier League this season.

Alvaro Negredo, currently at Valencia on loan from Manchester City, could also be on his way.

Karanka told the club’s official website: ” I am really pleased he has joined.

“He is a player we know a lot about and he is a good addition to the squad. He is a good lad, and he has played a lot of games for Valencia.

“He knows this country as well because he was at Liverpool as a young player. He is a good signing for us.”

Barragan has not been capped by the Spanish national side, but he has represented them at a host of youth levels. He also has a wealth of Champions League experience.
