England manager Roy Hodgson has revealed that midfielder Fabian Delph may miss this summer’s European Championships, while doubts remain over Daniel Sturridge.

Delph, of Manchester City, is currently sidelined with a groin injury, and he has been moved to a standby list.

The England players arrived at the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead on Thursday in preparation for their friendly match against Australia at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light, followed by the deadline for choosing the final 23-man squad on 31 May.

Whilst fielding questions from the media, Hodgson also revealed that Sturridge is also having groin problems, and is also a doubt for the tournament.

Neither player will feature against Australia, and Sturridge’s absence may mean a start for Manchester United’s teenage sensation Marcus Rashford.

Jamie Vardy will not take the field on Friday after getting married yesterday, and the pair of Wayne Rooney and Joe Hart will also be rested, with Hodgson taking an opportunity to look at some of his fringe players, including Fraser Forster who will start between the posts.

On Delph’s injury and move to the standby list, Hodgson said: “It means he probably won’t be with us in the final 23, unless of course we have injuries.

“I have put him on the standby list, which he understands and accepts. I don’t think it is going to be a long-term injury for him, so if I need him and want him to come along with us it is easy for me to call him and ask him to do so.

“I have said to him, with the situation we have with the other 25 players, it is unlikely.”
