Boro boss plays down chances of a return from loan due to player’s quality

Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka has claimed there is little chance of Patrick Bamford returning to the club on loan, because he’s too good for the Championship.

Bamford, who officially belongs to Chelsea, enjoyed a successful season on-loan at the Riverside last year, bagging 19 goals and winning the Championship player of the year award.

There were rumours that Boro would try and secure him for another year this term, as they look once more to push for a return to the Premier League.

However, boss Karanka conceded that he will be most likely be playing top-flight football next season.

Too Much Class

He said: “I don’t think Patrick’s coming because he showed everybody last season that he can play in the Premier League and I am sure he has offers to play in the Premier League, he has offers to play in other countries because he is a very good player”

Bamford has warned Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho that he won’t be content with bench warming next season.

The England Under-21 player is just one of three recognised forwards at Stamford Bridge – alongside Diego Costa and Radamel Falcao.

He said in April: “I don’t have any reason not to be at Chelsea. It is my dream to put on that blue shirt and play for them eventually.

“However, after two years regularly playing out on loan, going back and sitting on the bench wouldn’t really help me.”
