Chelsea turn down bid for defender

Chelsea have rejected a bid from Borussia Monchengladbach for defender Andreas Christiansen.

Monchengladbach were hoping to tempt the 20-year-old back to Germany on a permanent basis, after the Danish international spent the first year of a two-year loan spell with them last season.

But despite impressing chiefs at the Bundesliga side, their offer of ÂŁ14.25m has been turned down by the Blues.

He made 39 appearances for Monchengladbach last season, compared to only a handful of appearances at Chelsea.

He not only impressed bosses at Monchengladbach, he also impressed the club’s fans, who voted him their player of the season, ahead of Granit Xhaka, now of Arsenal.

Christiansen was also voted Under-17 Danish Young Player of the Year in 2012, the same age group also won by Christian Eriksen of Tottenham (2008) and Nicklas Bendtner (2004)

Instead of a permanent deal, Christiansen seems set to spend a second season on loan with Monchengladbach, with no further talks expected until the winter.
