Liverpool’s goalscoring youngster Sheyi Ojo was very close to not appearing in the red of the Kop, but rather the blue of Chelsea, according to reports.

Ojo, 18, marked his home debut with a goal in the FA Cup Third Round Replay victory over Exeter City.

But he was very close to signing for Chelsea in 2011 from Milton Keynes Dons.

A fee was even agreed between the Premier League champions and the Championship club.

Rated one of the country’s most exciting young prospects was seemingly on his way to Stamford Bridge for around ÂŁ2m.

However, a last minute snag meant the deal was not completed, and Ojo instead up at Liverpool instead.

Reds manager Jurgen Klopp, though impressed with Ojo, is not keen to throw him in at the deep end just yet.

‘The target at the end of the road is [playing for] Liverpool in the Premier League,’ Klopp said.

‘For this you have to be ready in all parts of development. It was the first sign of him – it’s good.

‘He is very young. Not 20 interviews next week, not man-of-the-match things. Leave the guys as they are. It’s not protecting, but give the lads time to develop.

‘Everybody who’s seen him play can see what big skills he has, but there are a lot of things he has to work on. I’m happy to have him here.’
