Liverpool are close to capturing the signature of Newcastle United midfielder Giorginio Wijnaldum, after Tottenham pulled out of a deal.

Wijnaldum and Newcastle suffered relegation from the Premier League last season, and Wijnaldum seemingly does not want to help the Geordies in their quest to return.

Spurs were keen on the 25=year-old, with Everton also interested.

But The Mirror claims Spurs have decided to withdraw their interest, leaving a clear path for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to make his move.

It is believed Tottenham took a step back after Newcastle put a price tag of £27m on the Dutchman, having paid PSV Eindhoven £14.5m to sign the player last summer.

Liverpool depart for the United States on Thursday for a pre-season tour, and are confident of wrapping up a deal before then.

Wijnaldum has expressed his interest in moving to the red half of Merseyside, and is expected to make his way there for a medical before completing his transfer.

He would join Josip Matic, Sadio Mane and Loris Karius at Anfield this summer, and he could be joined by Augsburg defender Ragnar Klavan.

Klavan is reportedly having a medical with Liverpool today.
