Vincent Kompany’s career in recent years has been disrupted by injury, and he has been struck down again.

The Manchester City captain has been forced out of Belgium’s game with Estonia this Sunday.

He has been hampered by a groin injury, which kept him out of Wednesday’s game with the Netherlands, where he withdrew shortly before kick-off.

‘Vincent had discomfort in his groin area. He didn’t train on Friday and I am not going to take him into consideration for Sunday,’ said Belgium manager Roberto Martinez.

‘It is nothing new. We all know Vincent is so eager to help the group at club and international level but at the moment the only thing that matters is getting him back to full fitness.

‘We are going be working very closely with his club. But at the moment it is impossible to push him in a competitive game. We are going to work on a daily basis with his club. The idea is to get him fully fit.

‘The biggest achievement is his mental strength. It is a time to work very closely with the player and it is important we focus on getting him back to full fitness.

‘A player gets frustrated if you are not allowed to pay football. You become a human being.

‘He is going to stay with the group. He is already on a specific programme. He will join with Manchester City on Monday.”
