Manchester United’s stuttering start to the season has taken another blow with the news that Eric Bailly is facing two months on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Ivory Coast international Bailly, who arrived at Old Trafford in the summer from Spanish side Villarreal in a ÂŁ30m deal, had impressed at the heart of the defence alongside Chris Smalling.

He suffered the injury during Sunday’s 4-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and is facing a spell on the treatment table. It appears that Bailly has gained a lateral knee ligament injury.

Bailly took to Instagram to thank fans for their messages of support. He said: ‘I wanted to thank you for all the messages of support that I received since the injury!

‘I hope to be able to play again for United and The Elephants before two months, God willing. Thanks for always being there!’

Bailly could miss as many as twelve games over the next two months, returning just in time for the busy Festive period and the forthcoming African Cup of Nations tournament, to be held in Gabon.
