Alexei Lalas claims Wayne Rooney would be ‘stealing money’ if he signed for LA Galaxy

LA Galaxy are keen on signing Manchester United star Wayne Rooney, but have been warned that signing England’s record scorer would be ‘stealing money’ should he sign.

Rooney has also been linked with an emotional reunion with Everton, the club where it all started for him.

The striker has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford in recent months, and was booed by a section of England fans at their recent game with Malta.

LA Galaxy have shown that they are not afraid to attract some of British football’s biggest names. Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard currently plies his trade with the MLS club, as does former Arsenal defender Ashley Cole, while Republic of Ireland hitman Robbie Keane has also donned their white shirt in recent years.

However, former USA international Alexei Lalas, who has both played for and been general manager at Galaxy, is of the opinion that Rooney is not the player he once was.

Lalas, who these days works as an analyst for Fox Sports, told the Sun:

They got little return on the Steven Gerrard investment and does Rooney still have much to give and something which works in the MLS, even if he is five years younger than Gerrard?

‘Are you replacing a player who had limited involvement and limited impact, with yet another player who will have limited involvement and limited impact?

‘If Rooney, at 31, doesn’t still have the things which made him great, then it’s problematic.

‘Living in Beverly Hills is great. But if you don’t couple it with performances on the field then you are just stealing money.

‘The player he is now isn’t the player of ten years ago – but then no one is.’
