Manchester United set Rooney asking price

The Red Devils and England striker has fallen down the pecking order for both club and country

Manchester United will not force captain Wayne Rooney out of Old Trafford, but will look to recoup most of the £25 million they spent on bringing him to the club from Everton if he does chose to leave.

The 31-year-old is enduring a difficult spell in his career, in which he has fell out of favour at both club and international level, having suffered a significant loss of form in recent months.

Jose Mourinho has left England’s all-time top goalscorer on the bench on numerous occasions this season and has yet to look like breaking his way back into the Portuguese’s plans.

It is understood the Red Devils are willing to let their long-serving star depart Old Trafford, but he will command a significant fee, which could rule him out of a move to the MLS, while former club Everton may be reluctant to pay that fee – given his age.

After 12 years of service at Manchester United, the general belief is that it’s time for Rooney to look for a new challenge elsewhere – whether that be in the Premier League or abroad.

China is the clearest option for the 31-year-old, as his £300,000-a-week wages would not be a problem over in Asia. However, it’s not clear whether a move to a league of such low stature would be of interest to the England international.
