The midfielder had an excellent career for his country

Manchester United attacking midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has retired from playing for Germany.

The 31-year old played a key role in his nation’s 2014 World Cup win in Brazil, but today announced his decision to step down as captain via Twitter.

The former Bayern Munich man, who earned over 120 caps for Germany, tweeted: “Dear fans of the Germany national team. I have just asked the national team coach not to consider me any more for his national team selections in future since I would like to retire.”

Schweinsteiger’s final appearance was as a substitute in Die Mannschaft’s 2-0 defeat to France in the Euro 2016 semi-final.

“It wasn’t to be and I have to accept it. The historic and emotional high was winning the World Cup in 2014,” insisted Schweinsteiger.
