Wednesday’s Capital One Cup Review

The second half of the COC’s third round were played this evening.

Teams were hoping to join Aston Villa, Stoke, Hull, Leicester, Middlesbrough, Bournemouth, Man City and Everton in the fourth round.

Crystal Palace 4-1 Charlton Athletic

Delight Gayle fired a second half hat-trick to lead Palace to a win over London rivals Charlton.

Charlton’s Alou Diarra had a night to forget, giving away two penalties before being sent off.

Frazier Campbell scored the first for Palace whilst Mouhamadou-Naby Sarr scored a consolation for the Championship side.

MK Dons 0-6 Southampton

Southampton strolled through to the fourth round with a thumping win over MK Dons.

Jay Rodriguez, Sadio Mane and Shane Long all struck twice.

Rodriguez got his first…and his second goal in English competition for almost 18 months after a length injury layoff.

Newcastle 0-1 Sheff Wednesday

Lewis McGugan struck with 14 minutes left to secure a upset at St.James Park.

Wednesday made 10 changes to the side that started at the weekend but the side still managed to get and win and restrict the home side to not a single shot on target.

Norwich 3-0 West Brom

Norwich booked a place in the fourth round with a convincing 3-0 win over The Baggies.

A West Brom side that was much changed from the weekend simply couldn’t cope with Norwich.

Goals from Matt Jarvis, Kyle Lafferty and a Sebastian Pocognoli saw the Canaries through.

Tottenham 1-2 Arsenal

Mathieu Flamini scored either side of half-time to give Arsenal a win in the North London derby.

The double came in Flamini’s first appearance of the campaign.

Spurs had equalised when Chadli’s shot was deflected off Chambers in to his own net.

Walsall 1-4 Chelsea

Chelsea eased past Walsall with a 4-1 win at the Banks’ stadium.

Ramires and Loic Remy put the visitors in the driving seat in the first-half before James O’Connor got one back just before half-time.

Kennedy killed the game off for Chelsea before Pedro added another in the dying minutes.

Liverpool 1-1 Carlisle (3-2 pens)

Adam Bogdan was the help of the shoot-out, saving three penalties to help Liverpool in to the fourth round.

Liverpool opened the scoring through Danny Ings in the first half but Derek Asamoah levelled not long after.

It stayed like that until the end of extra-time which meant penalties loomed.

Liverpool eventually stuttered through with a 3-2 win in the shootout.

Man United 3-0 Ipswich

United sealed a place in the fourth round with a routine win against Ipswich.

Rooney, Pereira and Martial all netted at Old Trafford to see Van Gaal’s side through.
