Tottenham Hotspur have beaten off competition from Everton to sign Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko in a £30m, five-year deal.

Everton thought they had completed the deal, but Sissoko changed his mind late on, claiming he did not want to sign for the Toffees, including not answering a call from Everton manager Ronald Koeman.

Everton pulled out of the deal with just thirty minutes of the transfer window remaining, clearing the way for Tottenham to swoop in.

They had a bid of £16m earlier this summer turned down by Newcastle. The North London club were told at the time to come back with a better offer, and they did exactly that late in the window.

Sissoko signed for Newcastle in 2013 from French side Toulouse for £1.5m. The 27-year-old made 37 appearances for the Geordies last season, but could not prevent their relegation from the Premier League

He has played for France at every level that he was eligible for, and has 44 caps to his name. He played a key part in France’s Euro 2016 campaign.
