West Ham United may dip into the transfer market after defender Aaron Cresswell was ruled out for four months.

Cresswell limped out of Saturday’s friendly with German side Karlsruher.

Scan results revealed the extent of the injury which will see the 26-year-old sidelined until the end of November. He is due to see a specialist next week.

West Ham’s medical chief Stijn Vandenbroucke told the club website: “Whatever course of action we decide to take, Aaron faces a period of rest, followed by treatment and rehabilitation and he will be out of action for a period of between three and four months.”

The injury to Cresswell could see Hammers chief Slaven Bilc enter the transfer market for cover.

The 26-year-old was almost an ever-present in the Premier League last season, only missing one league game as the club finished in seventh.

He recently signed a new contract with the club, committing his future until 2021.

The news of Cresswell’s injury was part of a double injury blow for the club ahead of their first season in their new home at the Olympic Stadium.

Midfielder Manuel Lanzini, who was due to represent Argentina at this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio, has, like Cresswell, suffered a knee injury.

‘We are in close contact with Manuel and the AFA (Argentine Football Association), who have started a late-release replacement procedure with the IOC,’ added Vandenbroucke.

‘Until he has been assessed by the IOC, he cannot be replaced, but after this process has been completed we want him to return to England to be assessed by our own medical staff as soon as possible.’
