Incorrect decision making in recent games has issued several debates amongst football fans over launching of Video Assistant Referee.

The snippet of VAR impact was seen in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

It was the thrilling encounter between Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion at Anfield on Saturday evening which generated the most complaints about the controversial new technology.

Complaints which included, but were not limited to the 4 conditions below:

– The VAR is referred to too often
– It takes too long for the VAR to make a decision
– Players and fans don’t know whether they should celebrate goals or not
– There is still too much room for subjective interpretation of events

However, with VAR only being used to a very small extent it gave us the sample in the FA Cup ties, the Match of the Day team also dedicated a significant portion of their show to refereeing decisions which were incorrectly made during the Premier Leagues matches and many more competitions across Europe without the benefit of the new technology.

Anfield once again played host to a quite incredible game of football (well, ten minutes of it was at least) which culminated in a flurry of contentious refereeing decisions. Ironically, after decisions made by the VAR last week helped eliminate Liverpool from the cup, this week it was the absence of the VAR which arguably cost them all the 3 Premier League points in their 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

Fifa are understood to be planning to use VAR at this summer’s World Cup, while there’s also talk of it being introduced to the Premier League as early as next summer.

It may not solve every problem and it may cause slight interruptions to your viewing pleasure but it will ultimately bring greater justice to the game and that has got to be worth waiting for.
