The Portugese coach tried to sign him three times, according to Gerrard

Steven Gerrard has recently admitted Jose Mourinho was desperate for him to force a move to Real Madrid.

The former Liverpool captain was courted by Mourinho several times during his time at Anfield, perhaps most notably when the Portugese coach was in charge at Real.

Gerrard has spoken out about the way in which he was encouraged to create a stir at Liverpool in a bid to force a move through.

“They wanted me to kick up a war to get out of Liverpool for a certain amount of money, which I wasn’t prepared to do,’ he said.

“I’m not prepared to go to war and plus I was very happy and stable at the time.”

Mourinho ‘one of the best’, says Gerrard

Gerrard, 35, who left Liverpool to join MLS side LA Galaxy over the summer, admitted he has the utmost respect for the current Chelsea boss.

He added: “I’ve got nothing but admiration for what he’s achieved. Not just at Chelsea when he’s been a rival but at Porto when he went to Inter Milan. He’s had an incredible career.

“He is one of the best out there and he’s tried to sign me on three occasions, three different teams.

“Even though I haven’t played for him, I’ve had that close relationship with him, he’s given me some good bits of advice and yeah I’m a big fan.”
