Atletico boss hints he could leave the Vicente Calderon

Diego Simeone has given the biggest hint yet that he could quit Atletico Madrid this summer, after losing the Champions League final to local rivals Real Madrid on Saturday night.

The 46-year-old was left emotional after his side, for the second time in three seasons, lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid at the San Siro in Milan. And the former Atletico player admits he is now considering his future in the Spanish capital.

“Do I have to continue with Atletico or is it the end of a cycle? I have to think about that,” Simeone admitted.

“It (defeat) puts a lot of years on you. Congratulations to Real Madrid – once again they were superior to us, this time at penalties.”

Atletico lost the 2014 final 4-1, after a 93rd-minute Sergio Ramos goal took the tie into extra time, and again Rojiblancos fans left with a bitter taste, as Antoine Griezmann missed a penalty in normal time and Juanfran failed from the spot in the shoot out, to set up Ronaldo to score the decisive spot kick.

“We started the game badly, then we got ourselves organised from the 20th minute. In the second half we could have equalised very quickly but our intention was clear.” said Simeone.

“What really hurts me is to see the hurt of the people who’ve paid to come here – I feel a bit responsible that I wasn’t able to give them what they wanted. That’s what really hurts. I feel responsible for the fans who have bought their tickets.

“I’m proud of my players, they’ve made an extraordinary effort, to beat Barcelona and Bayern Munich (in earlier rounds). The effort was really tremendous.”

Incredibly, Atletico Madrid are yet to win the European Cup, after losing to Bayern Munich in a replay in the 1974 final.
