Manchester United and West Ham United have expressed their interest in signing Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez. And the Colombian’s Bernabeu future has been thrown into doubt after comments made by Real chief Zinedine Zidane.

Rodriguez arrived in Spain after a fine 2014 World Cup with Colombia, but despite an impressive first season, did not live up to his £63m price tag last season, after signing from Monaco.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is linked with a reunion with his former player, while the Hammers are also keen after moving into their new Olympic Stadium home.

Zidane has hinted that there could be a few departures from Real, including Rodriguez.

French legend Zidane said: ‘The idea with James is the same as with everyone else – he’s a Real Madrid player,’ said Zidane.

‘I’m not going to tell you that James is a starter. He’s an important player. We’ll see what happens this year, I have a big squad and it’s complicated.

‘I have to play the most competitive side I can and I’ll do the same thing this season, that’s my responsibility.’

Rodriguez is not with the Real squad on their pre-season North American tour. They will take part in the International Champions Trophy, with games against PSG, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
