Everton are closing in on signing Swansea centre back Ashley Williams, as Ronald Koeman hopes to complete the £10m deal by end of the week.

Everton are hopeful of completing the £10million signing of Wales and Swansea captain Ashley Williams by the end of this week.

Director of football Steve Walsh and manager Ronald Koeman have identified the 31-year-old as a key recruit as they look to sell John Stones to Manchester City and face starting the season without the injured Phil Jagielka.

Koeman also wants Sunderland’s £20m-rated centre-back Lamine Kone as he looks to correct Everton’s defensive frailties of last season.

Williams has two years left on contract, but turns 32 later this month. Swansea will be keeping this in mind, as however integral he is to the team, he will not be worth this kind of money for much longer as his age increases. The club recognise the offer makes good economical sense despite his influence on the team.

He has played over 300 league games for the club, and played 36 times last season in all competitions.
